Policies
nLone Star is the official student yearbook of James Bowie High School and is an open forum for student expression. Lone Star serves as a laboratory and educational tool in the training of student journalists. Lone Star is not reviewed by school administration prior to distribution, and the adviser will not act as a censor. Content represents the views of student staff and not school or district officials.
Lone Star works to avoid bias and/or favoritism. We strive to tell the story of the year as comprehensively and authentically as possible. Our goal is accurate and factual reporting in preserving the memories and experiences of the school year. Content decisions are made by the student yearbook staff and should reflect all areas of student interest. We hold ourselves to the standards of the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics.
We make every effort to avoid printing libel, obscenities, innuendo and material that threatens to disrupt the learning process or is an invasion of privacy. We avoid electronic manipulation that alters the truth of a photograph without indicating that the photograph is an illustration. We work to take and use our own photos, but will cite the source when outside photos are acquired and ensure they are used under fair use.
In the event of a student or faculty death, prior to the yearbook’s publication (late-March), the yearbook staff will offer an 1/8th page memorial that will include the person's photo, if available, "Class of", birth and death years and the words, “In Memory.” The memorial will run in the current year’s yearbook.
Parents have the opportunity to purchase a senior ad for the year the student would have graduated. This ad will run in the senior ad section or the index, depending on where space allows.
When preferred names are registered with the school, Lone Star works to use the preferred name. By student request, preferred names for the yearbook can also be registered through a Google Form that verifies district credentials.
